British Citizenship After ILR
How and when to apply for naturalisation after Indefinite Leave to Remain, including the 12-month waiting period, the spouse exception, and what you need to gather.

The Naturalisation Timeline
Once you have Indefinite Leave to Remain, British citizenship is the next and final step. The timeline depends on your circumstances:
Standard Route (Most Applicants)
You must wait 12 months after your ILR grant date before applying for naturalisation. During this period, you must continue to live in the UK and maintain your ILR status.
Spouse of a British Citizen
If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you can apply for naturalisation immediately after receiving ILR. There is no 12-month waiting period. This is a significant advantage of the spouse route.
Naturalisation Eligibility Calculator
Enter your ILR grant date to find out when you can apply for British citizenship. If you used our ILR calculator, enter the qualifying date it showed you — but remember, the naturalisation clock starts from the date ILR is actually granted, not the date you become eligible to apply.
Naturalisation Eligibility Date Calculator
The date your ILR was granted (shown on your BRP or decision letter).
If married to a British citizen, you can apply for naturalisation immediately after ILR — no 12-month waiting period.
This calculator provides an indicative date based on the standard naturalisation waiting period. You must also meet the good character requirement, pass the Life in the UK test (if not already done for ILR), and meet the English language requirement. Seek advice from an OISC-registered immigration adviser or SRA-regulated solicitor for your specific circumstances.
Life in the UK Test and English Requirement
Good news: if you already passed the Life in the UK test and met the English language requirement for your ILR application, you do not need to take either again for naturalisation. Your Life in the UK pass certificate remains valid, and your English language qualification (SELT pass or UK ENIC-recognised degree) carries over. This is one of the few parts of the naturalisation process that is simpler than the ILR process.

The naturalisation application fee is set by the Home Office and changes periodically. The current fee must be verified on the official gov.uk page. There is also a citizenship ceremony fee (typically £80) if your application is successful. Biometric enrolment may be required.
Fee placeholder: We are verifying the current naturalisation fee against gov.uk. Please check the official source above for the exact amount before applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long after ILR can I apply for British citizenship?
For most routes, you must wait 12 months after your ILR grant date before applying for naturalisation. However, if you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you can apply immediately after ILR — there is no 12-month waiting period. Use the calculator above to find your earliest application date.
Do I need to take the Life in the UK test again for naturalisation?
No. If you already passed the Life in the UK test for your ILR application, you do not need to take it again. The pass certificate remains valid for naturalisation. The same applies to the English language requirement — if you met it for ILR, you do not need to retake it.
What is the difference between naturalisation and registration?
Naturalisation is the most common route to British citizenship for adults. Registration is a separate process used for children, certain British Overseas Territories citizens, and people with other special connections to the UK. Most ILR holders will use naturalisation.
Can I apply for citizenship with a criminal record?
You must meet the good character requirement. Unspent criminal convictions can affect your application. The Home Office will check your criminal record and immigration history. If you have any convictions, seek advice from an OISC-registered immigration adviser or SRA-regulated solicitor before applying.
