How the Financial Requirement Works

The UK spouse visa requires the sponsoring partner (the British or settled citizen) to meet a minimum income threshold. The current threshold is £29,000 gross annual income, in force since 11 April 2024.

Income from employment: The most common way to meet the requirement is through gross annual salary. You will need payslips (typically 6 months) and an employer letter as evidence.

Using savings: If your income alone is not enough, you can use savings. The first £16,000 is disregarded, and every £2.50 above that counts as £1 of income. This calculator applies that formula automatically when you enter savings.

Transitional rate: A lower rate of £18,600 applies to some applicants who applied before 11 April 2024 and are extending on the same route. If you think this applies to you, check the gov.uk guidance and seek advice from an OISC-registered immigration adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum income requirement for a UK spouse visa?

The current minimum income requirement is £29,000 gross annual income, in force since 11 April 2024. A lower transitional rate of £18,600 applies to some applicants who applied before 11 April 2024 and are extending on the same route. Check the gov.uk guidance to confirm which rate applies to you.

Can I use savings to meet the financial requirement?

Yes. If your income is below the minimum requirement, you can use savings to make up the shortfall. The first £16,000 of savings is disregarded. Every £2.50 of savings above £16,000 counts as £1 of income. For example, if your income is £25,000 (a £4,000 shortfall), you would need £26,000 in savings (£16,000 disregarded + £4,000 shortfall × 2.5 = £10,000, total £26,000).

Does the financial requirement change if I have children?

The minimum income requirement for the initial spouse visa application is £29,000 regardless of whether you have children. However, additional financial requirements may apply when extending or applying for ILR, particularly if you are also applying for dependant children. Check the gov.uk guidance for your specific circumstances.

What counts as income for the spouse visa financial requirement?

Income from employment (gross annual salary), self-employment, certain benefits and pensions, and savings (above £16,000) can all count. Non-employment income such as rental income or dividend income may also qualify in some cases. The exact rules are complex — check the gov.uk guidance and seek advice from an OISC-registered immigration adviser if you are unsure.
