The Global Talent Route to ILR
The Global Talent visa offers a faster path to ILR for individuals endorsed as leaders or potential leaders in their field. The qualifying period is 3 years for exceptional talent endorsements and 5 years for exceptional promise endorsements. Unlike the Skilled Worker route, there is no employer or CoS requirement — you are free to work in any capacity. The 180-day rolling absence limit still applies.

Crown dependencies: Time with permission in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man can count toward continuous residence.

What Makes the Global Talent Route Different
Faster qualifying tiers: The Global Talent route is unique in offering a 3-year path to settlement for those endorsed as exceptional talent. If you were endorsed as exceptional promise, the qualifying period is 5 years. Check your endorsement letter to confirm which applies — this is the single most important factor for your ILR timeline.
No employer requirement: There is no sponsor, no CoS, and no continuous employment requirement. You can work as an employee, freelancer, contractor, or business owner. This makes the route more flexible but means your evidence focuses on residence and absences rather than employment continuity.
Endorsement body matters: Your endorsing body (Tech Nation, Arts Council, British Academy, Royal Society, UK Research and Innovation, etc.) determines whether you are classed as talent or promise. This classification is fixed at endorsement and cannot be changed later.

Is the Global Talent ILR qualifying period 3 or 5 years?
It depends on your endorsement type. If you were endorsed by Tech Nation, the British Academy, the Royal Society, or the Royal Academy of Engineering as an individual of exceptional talent (not promise), the qualifying period is 3 years. If you were endorsed as an individual of exceptional promise, or through most other endorsing bodies, the qualifying period is 5 years. Check your endorsement letter to confirm which applies to you.
Does the Global Talent route require continuous employment?
No. The Global Talent route does not require an employer or sponsor. You are free to work as an employee, freelancer, or business owner. This is one of the key differences from the Skilled Worker route — there is no CoS or employer letter requirement for ILR.
What absence rules apply to the Global Talent route?
The standard rolling 180-day absence limit applies. You must not spend more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during your qualifying period. Use the calculator above to check your absences.
Can I switch to Global Talent from another visa route?
Yes. You can switch to Global Talent from most visa routes from within the UK. However, time spent on your previous route does not count toward the Global Talent qualifying period — the clock starts from the date your Global Talent visa is granted.
